Feedback Skills for Leaders

Why learning feedback skills is crucial for leaders

One of the hallmarks of becoming an effective team is to recognise each other's strengths and weaknesses. Knowing your innate strengths allows you to play to these. This is ‘the difference that makes all the difference’ between doing your best work or being mediocre. 

Giving each other frank feedback on strengths and weaknesses allows people to adjust behaviours. Paying attention to one's behaviours makes a big difference to how you all perform. 

Giving and receiving feedback is tough. This is because you enter into a potential ‘danger zone’. Fear of peer pressure or distaste of letting a colleague down etc are common reactions. However, holding back on warranted praise or constructive feedback is not being honest with yourself or others. In the end, it leads to distrust.

Spending time out doing this as a team is worth it, it teaches resilience. It helps you all to raise your game. It reminds you all to live up to your agreed performance standards. This will then raise your standards of excellence.

An important part of feedback is to give people praise for things done well. For example, people going the 'extra mile', who put themselves out or achieve something worthwhile etc. Saying well done goes a long way to making people feel good. Knowing this counts. So learning to do this well, is as important as giving other types of feedback too.

Encouraging people to play to their strengths at work is a winning formula. This helps to produce a high-performance culture where people thrive. Your job as leaders is to create this capacity. It starts with you as leaders.

Feedback is the hallmark of an effective team and it changes cultures.
