Sometimes people ask me, what the most productive way of developing leaders and teams to achieve business success is? This article discusses a sensible approach that grows your people and meets your specific business needs.
What needs to change to make your team productive?
As you can imagine all sorts of factors influence leadership and team development, for example:
- What is your overall objective for the team and the business? Is it forming a new, team or working with an existing team, coaching in new behaviours and attitudes, or designing workshops to help your teams focus on a specific business objective?
- What about the team dynamic? Are we taming a toxic team, dealing with dysfunction or mistrust, re-energising the leadership, or preparing emerging leaders for future success?
- What is the overall company culture? Do you need to adjust or change things about your underlying culture? Is the culture hindering your overall drive for better results?
- Is it about helping your teams to work better or smarter together? By developing peoples’ soft skills and their emotional intelligence makes businesses more productive. The return on investment will pay off downstream on the top and bottom line results.
Whatever challenge you are facing leading your business or your team, developing your teams will pay off in tangible business results downstream.
"I have noticed that the ‘x factor’ here is, emotionally intelligent teams consistently exceed expectations to deliver better results than teams that haven’t spent time as a team and as individuals to develop."
Get a skilled facilitator to help you
Whatever your reason to improve your team, investing in hiring a skilled facilitator that can deliver high-quality results is vital to help you get the best from your team development programmes. An expert facilitator will quickly help you to point out your problems areas and how to fix them. An experienced facilitator will help your team to make positive improvements and deliver your business objectives by:
- creating the right atmosphere for your team to open up people’s minds to their strengths and abilities,
- develop people from the inside-out by changing their behaviours and attitudes to others and work,
- providing pace and rhythm to real-life work activities, to provide an “outside-in” perspective,
- keep you on track with your business objectives,
- break up the logjams of conventional thinking, and sometimes just be a good listener.
I was trying to think of a single analogy, to sum up, my role facilitating top team performance. Fittingly no one job title does it justice. It’s like a combination of chef, conductor, football manager, priest and stand-up comedian.
Teams learn best by getting interactive
I have discovered that a blend of practical, interactive modules that are mixed and matched around work-based issues works very well. These can be structured around standalone issues or in combination to form a core development programme.
Workshops can include diagnostics and other simple and effective development tools to help teams change and get clarity on individual and group thinking. Furthermore, hands-on, real-life work examples can resolve long-standing problems.
Simple but powerful thought provokers often stay with executives for months and years to come. It’s all about high-quality delivery designed around your business needs.
An expert facilitator helps your people make remarkable mindset shifts that lead to productive changes to output - It's an inside-out job.
